1:30 a.m.

Karen was terrified. Panic seized her, but she forced herself to calm down. As quietly as possible, she gathered her sleeping bag and backpack. She didn’t know if whoever ran past her just now was still there. Did they keep on running, or double back? Were they watching her right now?

For a minute, she’d just stood there, frozen. She strained forward, but all she could hear was the lapping of the water on the side of the boat. Finally, she made up her mind. She had to see if the guy on his boat was okay. He might need help. Laying her gear down quietly on the deck of the Miss Behavin’, Karen crept back toward the Mary Ann.

She found him, lying on the deck, not moving, his head bashed in on one side. He looked dead, but she didn’t want to leave him if she could help. Shoving down the panic, she forced herself to step on board, lean down and check his pulse. He was beyond help.

Helplessly, she looked around. The black night beyond the boat held nothing but terror.

Karen bolted down the dock, grabbing her gear on the way. As she approached the Coast Guard station, she forced herself to slow down so as not to alert anyone who may hear or see her from inside the station. Once she was safely away from the harbor and was confident no one was following her, she made her way up the hill and hiked up an old logging road, crawling into a still-forested area until she felt safely hidden behind some brush.

For the next few hours, until daylight, she lay awake, shaking. Only a strong need to go to the bathroom forced her to come out. Finished with her business, she stood perfectly still, looking and listening. No bears. No bad guys. Just some noisy crows.

Karen wasn’t ready to come out of hiding yet. She needed time to think. Digging around in her backpack, she pulled out an apple, some beef jerky, and half a bottle of water. It would have to do. From the logging road she could make out all the police activity down at the docks. Part of her felt guilty for not going down there and telling them what she knew, but really, she didn’t know much.

She didn’t know who killed that man . . . she didn’t want to get involved. In the light of day, some reason had returned. The man was dead—she couldn’t help him.

After finals, she was out of here. Fall classes started in three weeks at her new home, the University of Oregon in Eugene. She had a scholarship. She had a work-study job lined up. She had to show up for work tomorrow—she needed money to get out of here, but she’d hide out here one more day.

Wednesday, August 15

Thirst drove Karen into town. Before it got crowded, she took a spit bath in the sink at the public restrooms near the shops and used the facilities.
